Flatonia hires Brent Mascheck as new athletic director/ head football coach
FLATONIA – The Flatonia Bulldogs superintendent Chris Sodek and his committee narrowed his list of athletic director and head football coach candidates down to six people after former athletic director and head football coach Chris Freytag departed a few months ago. Sodek and his committee ended up choosing Brent Mascheck to take on the new role. “We just felt best about Coach Mascheck’s past history,” said Sodek.

Fayetteville boys surging as playoffs approach
Lions boys basketball has been dominant all year with playmakers under second-year head coach Jake Diggs. Diggs seems to have the ultimate chemistry with this team while having players who know how to put the ball in the hoop. Some Fayetteville ballers include Keagan Supak, who’s one of the best athletes at Fayetteville, sharp-shooter Karson Corn, and gifted sophomore guard Easton Jaeger.

Schulenburg boys survive at home vs Bloomington
SCHULENBURG – The Schulenburg High School boys basketball team had the upper hand in a barn burner Jan. 31 at Shorthorns Gym and defeated Bloomington High School by a finals score of 50-42 in a game that went into overtime. The Shorthorns jumped out to a big lead early, but Bloomington was able to hang in the game with their shot-making until Schulenburg ultimately sealed the deal.

The La Grange High School soccer team has shown some great flashes in their recent stretch of games with two monstrous wins. One against Manor New Tech with a 4-0 result, then a 7-0 slaughtering vs Caldwell, both games being shutouts at home.

Lawmakers push $15K teacher raises
A group of House Democrats is proposing a $15,000 raise for the state’s teachers and a 25% raise for other state employees by using some of the state’s record budget surplus. State Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, announced the bill last week and was joined by Democratic legislators and teachers, the Austin American- Statesman reported.

Cardboard flaps
It wasn’t that long ago, so it seems, I was free-wheeling it down the road on my huge mo- torcycle with the mufflers doing that Harley-Davidson thing. Bikers would know what I mean. The wind blowing through my hair, hitting the open road with nary a care in the world. At least, that is how I imagined it as I rode my bicycle on FM 949 with card- board flaps pinned on my bike so the wheels’ spokes would hit the flap and make an awesome motorcycle sound. Of course, my hair wasn’t that long back then yet.

Founder’s Park in La Grange
LA GRANGE – The Founders Park located on the courthouse square is a small “pocket” park located next to the Fayette County Clerk's office. Patsy Creed donated the land for the park which was dedicated in September 2012. The donation was made in order for a small park to be created across from the courthouse to honor and tell the story of prominent Fayette County pioneer settlers.

The den supported the acoustical overtures for Sunday afternoons. Once it was a double-car garage. Now it is a sprawling carpeted room with bookshelves, cabinets full of vinyl records, glass-doored cabinets with China and Crystal, a television, Dad’s rocking chair, Mama’s sewing table, a 1911 upright piano, and a small prairie of open floor space.
