Grissom competes at NFAA Indoor National Championship

Flatonia Postmaster Michael Joseph McKim of Flatonia is now facing murder charges after he shot a man in Lavaca County on March 5. The victim has succumbed to his injuries.

SEALY – The Sealy Spring Festevil will spring to life on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The 2023 Spring Festival will feature Easter activities, including an Easter egg roll, egg toss competition and a Victorian Easter tea party for the kids. As always, there will be great entertainment for the adults as well, including performances by the Will Carter Band, Brown Sugar Band, and The Texas Theatre Company.

LA GRANGE – The Fayette County Country Music Opry hosted its monthly music fest with musicians Steven Kidwell and David Lewis on March 20 at the KC Hall in La Grange. The country music got the audience’s toes tappin’ and smiles a mile wide.

BELLVILLE – Well, not literally. But Bellville has a host of events for this upcoming weekend that will be hotter than a blue blaze! Texas Select from Forged in Fire will be at the Austin County Fair Grounds the weekend of April 1 in Bellville.

SEALY – The City of Sealy announced the retirement of Sealy Police Department Sgt. Fred Palmer. He has served as a police officer for 28 years.

SCHULENBURG – The 8th Annual Schulenburg Sausagefest is right around the corner commencing on Saturday, April 1, in Schulenburg.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10 at the 722 westbound mile marker on March 15. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Caron Howling, 46, of Channelview.

COLUMBUS – Destiny Psencik was present to represent the Turtle Wing Foundation during the regular meeting of the Colorado County Commissioner's Court on Feb. 27 in Columbus. The court made a proclamation for the month of April 2023 as Autism Awareness Month in Colorado County. Psencik is the executive director of the Turtle Wing Foundation which serves as a resource hub to connect families who have children with learning challenges with the services and support they need to be successful. Psencik said, 'Autism awareness is near and dear to our hearts.' She continued, 'We want to create a culture of awareness and acceptance. ' Turtle Wing serves all of Colorado, Fayette and Lavaca counties.

My husband, Peter, and I are staying in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which is, according to a lot of folks, a tourist town. Sometimes, the person saying this means it is not a place they would want to spend time. This puzzles me. I'm not sure why a town known for meatpacking or manufacturing would be a better place to spend time than a town known for tourism. But I respect anyone's right to spend time wherever they want, and Peter and I are happy in San Miguel, in large part because it is a tourist town.

COLORADO COUNTY – Ballot by Mail Applications ex pires at the end of every year. You MUST reapply yearly. This year the deadline to apply for a ballot by mail for the May 6, election is April 25, however, we ask that you get this step completed as soon as possible so there are no issues when receiving your voted

SEALY – The Bluebonnet Master Gardener Association will host its annual plant sale Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or when sold out. This year’s plant sale will be held at the Sealy Historical Park at 211 E. Main St. in Sealy.

SEALY – WC Tractor in Sealy held its open house on March 16 at its Sealy store. The doors swung open to host its customer appreciation dinner and presentation to a lobby full of people. After the social and a great dinner, special guest speaker Regional Program Leader Dr. Philip Shackelford of the Southeast District 9 Ag and Natural Resources presented Let’s Talk About Hay: Most Bale for Your Buck.

COLUMBUS – What started as a three-kilowatt, Class A radio facility in 1972 now puts out 6,000 watts of power at its location off Highway 71 North in Columbus. Owner John L. Labay received permission from the Federal Communications Commission for a construction permit to build a new facility to house the radio equipment and offices in August of 1973. In March of that year, construction began for a brick building.

RESS EAGLE LAKE - Eagle Lake Police Chief Kris Abbott has been suspended effective immediately while an investigation is ongoing about alleged policy violations.

COLUMBUS – Colorado County Chief Appraiser Jonathan Huebner resigned with an effective last day of March 17.

COLUMBUS – A Columbus man has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to to 40 years in the death of 46-year-old Sigsbee W. Thompson, in 2021.

  

The Austin County Fair Junior Fair Board is looking for students to join the board to serve as young leaders and role models in the fair association.
