RESS COLUMBUS –The historic Stafford Opera House in Columbus had a full house on May 7, when several hundred people attended another celebration for the Columbus bicentennial birthday. The gathering was a birthday party with a play, a beautiful cake, and a punch! The play was appropriately titled, 'Happy Birthday, Columbus!' It was set as a fifth-grade classroom with students giving reports about the history of Columbus and some Texas history. It featured local actors such as Mayor Lori An Gobert as the principal, Dr. Kirk Anderson as the superintendent, and Mark Candela as the teacher. The fid - gety and silly fifth-grade students were played by Ann Butler, Ester Chandler, Gary Chandler, John Crews, John Isbell, Shirley Isbell, Steve McCullough, Kathy Salguero, James Yearwood, and Bob Stiles with his dog, Beamer.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Garden Club hosted its annual Plant Sale on April 29 at Brookshire Brothers in Columbus.

WEIMAR – Nothing comes between rural fun time and barbecue. Gedenke could have been a washout with the heavy rains that whipped through on the morning of Gedenke on May 13. However, the barbecue pits kept smokin’ and the kids and kidsat- heart came out as soon as the sun peeked from the clouds.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a very important focus for Colorado County because there are a good number of citizens who are living miserable lives with Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Suicidal Thoughts, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Substance Addictions, Eating Disorders, lack of hope, lack of joy, medications that aren’t working and lack of money or transportation in order to receive treatment.

LA GRANGE – The Fayette Community Foundation (FCF) is pleased to announce that it administered a $40,000 designated grant on behalf of an anonymous donor to the Fayette County EMS on April 12. The grant will be used to support the newly built Station 4 in Schulenburg and enhance EMS’s mission of providing high-quality emergency medical services to the residents of Fayette County.

BELLVILLE – The name, John Bell Lewis, may not mean much to the newer residents of Bellville but Lewis was instrumental in many things Bellville.

LA GRANGE – The Fayette Public Library Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives Department recently finished putting together the Contraptions and Innovations: Early Fayette County Patents.

The Bluebonnet Master Gardeners, in conjunction with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension team, are pleased to announce our 6th year of holding Kids’ Kamp in Austin, Colorado, Fayette, and Washington Counties. This camp is designed to be educational but fun with the goal of igniting a passion in the youth of our area for gardening through unique experiences, impressing on them the importance and enjoyment of horticulture.

HALLETTSVILLE – The District 11 Texas Extension Education Association Spring Conference was held on April 11, in Hallettsville with Knellen Quinteros of Austin County as District 11 Director presiding. Also attending was Pat Allee (District 11 Secretary), Rita Jacobs (Delegate), Joan Buenger (Delegate), Claudia Cieslewicz, Gloria Havemann Carolyn Balke, Shirley Beum, Barney Zimmerman, Jessie Kokemor and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Distinguished Agent Michelle Wright.

During the Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club meeting on April 13, Lion Dan Canaris, right, presented Lion Sam Kana, who serves as president of the First National Bank of Eagle Lake as its guest speaker. Kana provided the Lions with an interesting update on current banking and financial policies and principles influencing today’s economy.
