FREE AFTER SCHOOL ART CLASSES COLUMBUS – The Live Oak Art Center located at 1014 Milam St. in Columbus offers free after school art classes every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. Register on the website www.liveoakartcenter.org under the classes and events tab. The free classes are offered throughout the whole school year. If registration is full they can always check back each semester.

The following article is the second concerning some of the banking problems, i. e., bank robberies, to visit Fayette County. The consequences of these robberies could be devastating to the public. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, FDIC, a United States government corporation which supplies deposit insurance to depositors in American banks, was first created in 1933. This was done to restore trust in the American banking system after the failure of more than one-third of the banks in our country due to the Great Depression (19291940). Prior to this, the depositor who had lost his money was left without any hope or help.

The saying, “Mad as a hatter” originated in the 19th century when people who made hats breathed the toxic mercury fumes from using mercury to treat the fur. Known as Mad Hatters Disease it results in “mad” or irrational behavior.

Drought conditions across the state dropped a percentage point in May compared to the previous month, with 26% of the state in some stage of drought, primarily in West and South Texas and parts of the Panhandle.

COLUMBUS – At the Columbus Lions Club meeting on June 10, Lion Robert Fait, a Sealy Lions Club member for 40 years, spoke about what Lionism meant to him.

CAT SPRING – Austin County Livestock Association President Glen Brandt welcomed approximately 175 people to the recent 74th meeting of the Austin County Livestock Association, held June 6 at the Cat Spring Agricultural Society Hall in Cat Spring. The members and guests enjoyed barbecue brisket and pork by Schovajsa Catering.

EAGLE LAKE – The 26th Annual Eagle Lake Fireworks Show will be held Wednesday, July 3, beginning at 9:15 p.m., at the traditional Calhoun Road location west of town about a quarter of a mile from Highway 90A in Eagle Lake.

BELLVILLE – The HomeGrown Vegetable Contest was held June 8 at Linseisen’s Feed & Supply in Bellville. Along with the contest, there was an educational program on How to Make Sauerkraut, presented by Robert Luedeker from Austin County Horticulture Committee.
