With good health and happiness on my mind today, I am compelled to write this column. In the habit of scouring cyberspace for beneficial ideas and practical medical research, I recently stumbled upon something that is good to know. I have determined to apply this in my own life immediately. Perhaps you might consider doing the same. It should be emphasized however that before you take medical or nutritional advice from a coffee-drinking typewriter nerd, it might be best to consult your own personal physician. But, with that being said, consider the following… In May of 2020, a research study was published by the National Institute for Health. This study presented evidence showing that citrus peelings exhibit anti-carcinogenic effects. Flavonoid compounds found in citrus peels have anti-cancer potential, affecting cellular processes including cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, metastasis, and angiogenesis. This is big news! Apparently, if you can ingest the good stuff in citrus peels (from oranges, lemons, grapefruit, etc.) you can help your body prevent and fight cancer.

COLUMBUS – In a regular display of tradition, the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department pushed its newest firefighting apparatus into its bay at the CVFD fire station on May 13. This is a practice that firefighters follow with every new truck, sparking curiosity as to why they don’t just back it in, considering it does, hopefully, have an engine.

MENTZ–The Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department, St. Roch’s Catholic Church, and the Bernardo community came together on May 11 on the grounds of St. Roch’s Catholic Church in Mentz to help raise money for Blake Schramm’s family. The Schramm family was involved with BVFD and members of St. Roch.

WEIMAR - Two days filled with wonderful fun and entertainment, Gedenke in Weimar kicked off on May 10 and didn’t stop until the late night of May 11. Downtown Weimar was packed with good times.

COLUMBUS – A dedicated staff member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Shelley Janik, has accepted the position of office manager. Shelley works tirelessly every day for the chamber’s members. She is the cheerful voice you hear when you call and the cheerful face you see when you come to the office. She is always upbeat and seeks to meet the needs of chamber members, the community at large, the visitors and tourists.
