New Colorado County Fair float unveiled
COLUMBUS–After 30 years, the Colorado County Fair royalty gets a new float courtesy of the many hours of dedicated service it took fair members and great sponsors. Fair volunteer Ronnie Huebel brought the float to the fairgrounds, and then all hands were on deck to piece it together and see how it looked in its final state.

Lone Star Healthy Streams workshop set
INDUSTRY – A Lone Star Healthy Streams workshop will be held on Aug. 30 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 15994 Hwy 159 W, Industry, to focus on watershed health and best management practices for grazing livestock, backyard poultry, and feral hogs. This event is open to the general public and will focus on the Mill Creek Watershed, including Washington and Austin Counties. The conference is offered jointly by the Mill Creek Watershed Partnership, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute, and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB).

For the tri-county area, relief came in Beryl’s eye, moving more towards Katy at the last moments before landfall on July 8, at about 4 a.m. on the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Hurricane Beryl’s effects began to be felt at 10 p.m. on July 7. Although it’s considered the dry side that the area was on, much-needed rain came by the bucketful. However, along with the rain came the wind that gusted up to 70-plus miles an hour in some locations.

Can You Clobber Cancer with Citrus?
“Happiness is good health and a bad memory.” Ingrid Bergman With good health and happiness on my mind today, I am compelled to write this column. In the habit of scouring cyberspace for bene- ficial ideas and practical medical research, I recently stumbled upon something that is good to know. I have determined to apply this in my own life immediately. Perhaps you might consider doing the same. It should be emphasized however that before you take medical or nutritional advice from a coffee-drinking typewriter nerd, it might be best to consult your own personal physician. But, with that being said, consider the following… In May of 2020, a research study was published by the National Institute for Health. This study presented evidence showing that citrus peelings exhibit anti-carcinogenic effects. Flavonoid compounds found in citrus peels have anti-cancer potential, affecting cellular processes including cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, metastasis, and angiogenesis. This is big news! Apparently, if you can ingest the good stuff in citrus peels (from oranges, lemons, grapefruit, etc.) you can help your body prevent and fight cancer.

Hay and forage producers encouraged to submit samples for analysis
All beef cattle and hay producers are encouraged to turn in a sample of their hay for analysis at this year’s Austin County Hay Show scheduled for Oct. 4. Hay sample collection boxes and forms will be available at the following drop-off locations: Bellville Farm & Ranch, Linseisen’s Feed & Supply Inc., and Austin County Extension Office, all in Bellville; Steinhauser’s in Sealy; Bernardo Farm & Ranch in Cat Spring; 4M Feed & Ranch in New Ulm; and Lindemann Store in Industry.

LCRA responds to drought conditions
LCRA is in Stage 1 of its drought response. Under Stage 1 conditions, LCRA allows landscape watering up to twice a week for domestic use customers that have a contract with LCRA to draw water directly from the Highland Lakes. LCRA requests its customers reduce water use by 10% and that its firm water customers, which primarily are cities, utilities and industries, implement mandatory water use restrictions.
