Local horticulturist speaks on native plants

COLUMBUS – Stacy Ren- ner with Take Root Nursery pro vided an interesting, humorous, and informative presentation on native Texas plants to the mem bers of the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). She discussed types, advantages, and uses of our local flora. She high - lighted how pioneers would use the local plants as they settled in Texas. Attendees were surprised as Renner explained the many uses of indigenous plants in food preparation, jellies, teas, medi cines, etc. These included what we may consider weeds! Along with the ever-familiar favorite dewberry, many edible wild plants (or weeds) included hen - bit, purslane, prickly pear, mus - tang grapes, yaupon, dandelion, winecup, and many more. With knowledge of identification and preparation, little did we know that a buffet could be in our yard.
