COLUMBUS - The Colum - bus Police reported that on Feb. 24 at 12:18 p.m., a Columbus man was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in the 800 Block of Fannin in Columbus.
FAYETTE COUNTY - Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reported the morning of March 2 around 1 a.m., Sgt. Ryan Meagher conducted a traf - fic stop on State Highway 71 in the westbound lane near Old Lockhart Road on a 2016 Red Camry for a traffic violation. Meagher made contact with the driver and observed a holster in plain view with no weapon in it and the vehicle was occupied by three males. Meagher asked the driver about a weapon and was advised the weapon was in the driver's door pouch. Assisting Meagher was Depu - ty Seth Nagel who arrived on the scene as consent to search the vehicle was given to Meagher. While searching the vehicle the driver admitted to having marijuana in the trunk. Meagher located two large bags of marijuana in the trunk and two handguns in the vehi - cle. Romario Nathan Barrett, 22 of Austin, was arrested and transported to the Dan R. FLATONIA - Shorthorns golfer Reid Janda accomplished the hardest feat in golf March 6 at the Flatonia golf tournament held at Flatonia Golf Course, an ace. According to Schulenburg High School head golf coach Rich Hoogendoorn, Janda hit a shot on the par 3 seventh hole that took one bounce and went in the hole. This was also Janda’s second hole-in-one in his lifetime.

BELLVILLE – The Bellville High School softball team blasted Royal High School at Brah- manettes Field March 3 by a final score of 15-0 and the game was called in the bottom of the third inning due to mercy rule. Bellville’s pitching was stellar and they were also able to work the pitcher while hitting the ball hard and finding gaps. "We were ex cited to start district,” said Bellville head softball coach Courtney Phillips.

GIDDINGS – The Flatonia High School basketball team outlasted Milano High School in a playoff match at Buffaloes Gym Feb. 28 by a final score of 62-50.
SAN ANTONIO - The Columbus High School girls basketball team was defeated by Holliday High School in the UIL state girls basketball tournament March 2 at the Alamodome in San Antonio by a final score of 59-40. The Lady Cardinals struggled to get their offense going throughout this game and Holliday's shooting accuracy was on, along with their ability to crash the boards and make layups. "Just one of those things, got to give them credit," said Columbus head girls basketball coach Mike Albers.
The Flatonia boys basketball team clinched a birth to their first state basketball tournament in school history with a 65-54 win against Thorndale High School March 4. This team has been dominant all year under head coach Chris Sodek and this isn't Sodek's first time at the state tournament. Sodek made back-to back state appearances with Mumford High School in 2012 and 2013, then won the state title with Mumford in 2014.
RESS BELLVILLE – The Bellville Lions Club “let the good times roll” during its Mardi Gras fundraising event on March 4 at the Austin County Fair Convention and Expo Center in Bellville. The annu-al event sets the mood for projects near and dear to Lion’s community service. Last year, over $90,000 was distributed.
