Weimar and La Grange High School softball programs both found themselves on the 2023 Blue Bell/TSWA (Texas Sports Writers Association) All-State softball team. Lady Leopard ju- nior outfielder Hailee Cooper earned a spot for the Class 4A honorable mention group.

As volleyball season approaches, there are certain teams in the area that have winning formula and are worth noting for evaluation, and La Grange volleyball fits right in that category. The Lady Leopards had a very talented bunch in 2022 with players such as University of Louisiana at Lafayette volleyball commit Maddi Fritz and middle hitter Camille Gonzalez.

Weimar softball senior pitcher Reagan Wick has earned a selection for the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Softball Super Elite Team for 2022-2023. Wick is committed to Colorado State University to play softball next year after leading her team to a state championship win and the team’s third-straight state tournament appearance.

The rewards and recognition continue to pile on for ’21 Bellville football graduate and Brahma all-time leading rusher Richard Reese. Reese was named by league media to the preseason All-Big 12 Conference team for the 2023-2024 season.

Bellville High School football alum and former NFL star Emmanuel Sanders will soon be inducted into the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Hall of Fame. The date of his induction will be on September 15 and Sanders was a machine from his high school career all the way into his pro career, playing for five NFL teams and reaching two Super Bowls, one being a win at Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning as his quarterback.

EAGLE LAKE – Colorado County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Troy Neisner issued the following press release: On July 4, 2023, at approximately 9:35 p.m., the Eagle Lake Police Department responded to the 300 block of Simmons Street in reference to a male and female who had been stabbed at the residence. The suspect had fled prior to arrival.

WHARTON– Wharton County Junior College recently announced a Free College initiative offering full tuition and fees scholarships to qualified students majoring in certain healthcare professions programs at the college. Students must be registered in a minimum of six semester credit hours and enrolled in the Licensed Vocational Nursing, Health Information Technology, Emergency Medical Services or Human Services programs at WCJC. The purpose is to encourage persistence and completion of certificates and degrees leading to employment in high-need allied health occupations. The simplicity of the Free College initiative is that it not only pays for qualified students' tuition and fees for the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters, but it also offers a seamless process for being considered. Students do not have to complete a scholarship application because, one to two weeks after they register, the scholarship will be applied to their accounts.

EEA (Extension Education Association) of Austin Coun-

The Multi-County New Landowner Education program is a series of eight informational meetings, seminars, and field days designed to make new landowners in Austin, Colorado, and Fayette Counties aware of what types of agricultural enterprises are best for their property. Participants in the program will hear from experts in a variety of fields in agriculture about best management practices that can be implemented on their own property. This innovative program assists new landowners in understanding the concepts of rural living. Participants in the program are given exposure to ideas on raising livestock and horses, plant identification, fence building, applying pesticides, soil testing, stock pond management, pond construction, fruit and nut pro duction, rainwater harvesting, turf management, and much more. The program serves as a way for new residents of these counties to network and meet new people in their communities, find out what can be done on their land, what operations can be successful, and possibly what opportunities they have to serve the community. The programs will be held on the third Friday of the months of August through November. Each month's meeting will be held at different locations in one of the four counties. The meetings begin at 1:30 p.m. and will last about four hours depending on the topic and possible tour stops. The cost for the program is $20.00 per person per meeting. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for pesticide applicators will be offered as they are applicable. A great selection of refreshments will be provided at each session. The Fayette County Extension office will host a CPR-First Aid Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 12, which will be conducted by Kim Sodek, Public Health Nurse TDSHS Region 6/5S.

The other night my wife prepared a tantalizing dish for dinner – eggplant parmesan. Loitering in the kitchen, preparing to fill my plate, I was reminded of a story. It is true, and relates a week-long escapade that was part of a trip to Europe undertaken in my youth. Misadventures make for good stories… Fresh out of college and work ing at the local newspaper, I was invited by two of my co-workers to join them on an adventure. We spent a glorious time gallivanting around Europe that summer.

Life is full of surprises. Like, when I found out the Easter Bunny is really white with pink ears instead of pink with white ears. Come to find out that San ta Clause is very friendly and jovial, not the six-foot mean old guy with a beard who had a little too much egg nog and threatened to carry off us kids at Grandma and Grandpa Jones’ house.

SCHULENBURG – Transitioning to college can be an exciting yet intimidating experience for many high school students. With new and unknown academic and social challenges on the horizon, it's normal for students to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that a summer bridge program can help alleviate some of the stress and make the transition to college easy and enjoyable.

Turtle Wing Foundation re cently received a $5,000 grant from Sparklight Charitable Giv- ing Fund. Turtle Wing was one of only six recipients in the state of Texas for the spring round of grants and one of 25 total grants awarded across Sparklight’s 24 states covered.
