Columbus baseball slaughters Randolph in playoff by mercy rule
FLATONIA – The Columbus High School baseball team matched up against Randolph High School in a playoff game at Bulldogs Field May 6 and defeated Randolph by mercy rule with a final score of 18-3. The Cardinals hitting was a force to be reckoned with and Randolph had trouble putting the bat on the ball due to Columbus’ elite pitching. "We talked about that we were up one to nothing in the series and we wanted to come out early and kind of set the tone for game two,” said Columbus head baseball coach Heath Allen.

Schulenburg softball beats Refugio in playoff series
Lady Horns softball has extended their 2023 season by winning two out of three games against Refugio High School in a playoff series May 4 and 5. After a relatively slow start to the year, Schulenburg has caught fire with an overall record of 19-9 and 8-6 in district. In the playoff series against Refugio, Schulenburg won the first game 7-2, lost the second game 6-7, and won the third game 9-1.

Fayette Community Foundation presents $40,000 grant to Fayette County EMS Station
LA GRANGE – The Fayette Community Foundation (FCF) is pleased to announce that it administered a $40,000 designated grant on behalf of an anonymous donor to the Fayette County EMS on April 12. The grant will be used to support the newly built Station 4 in Schulenburg and enhance EMS’s mission of providing high-quality emergency medical services to the residents of Fayette County.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month is a very important focus for Colorado County because there are a good number of citizens who are living miserable lives with Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Suicidal Thoughts, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Substance Addictions, Eating Disorders, lack of hope, lack of joy, medications that aren’t working and lack of money or transportation in order to receive treatment.

Derby done Texas style
BELLVILLE – Hats and hospitality are big in Texas but during the Derby party at High Noon Saloon in Bellville on May 6 was even bigger! The High Noon Saloon was packed for the second year in a row with a Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby Party. The band was adorable and the saloon was full of good music and lots of food, mint juleps and laughter.

Thunder by the Colorado a thunderous success
COLUMBUS – There was hardly a cloud in the sky but the thunder of exhaust pipes coming from souped-up trucks and tractors made it sound like all heck was breaking loose - and the crowd loved it. The weather was great, the trucks and tractors were fantastic and the stands were packed.

Clock ticking on moving bills
The clock is ticking on getting bills out of the House and to the Texas Senate, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick warned last week in a story in the Austin American-Statesman. Patrick presides over the Senate and is worried many bills that have made it out of House committees but have not gone before the full chamber will not be considered before the session ends.

Opry features musical groups in May
LA GRANGE - The Fayette County Country Music Club will host their monthly Opry Monday, May 15 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Grange. The show starts at 7 p.m. and the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is Larry Waddell grew up in Bernardo. His early influences in music were Elvis Presley and Earnest Tubb because these were his dad’s favorites. His brother and he started a band when he was 14 and even recorded a 45 record. He is currently working on recording an album of original songs with Van Lange music in Houston.

Just yesterday
I watched my grandsons level up in their scouting ranks this past Sunday. It seems just yesterday that I was holding them in my arms, pretending to drop them, and they were laughing up a storm because they knew Grandpa wouldn’t drop them. Just yesterday, I spent time with my grandparents–one in town and the other in the country. I loved them all. Just yesterday, I was watching Mom and Aunt Patsy performing in a play at Mentz Hall. I think it was Chattanooga Choo Choo. Now, it seems just yesterday, they both are no longer within arms reach.

Crisis Intervention Team attends conference
The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as such Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek is pleased to report that from April 20 through the 22 a number of deputies and local police department officers were able to attend the Texas Crisis Intervention Team Association conference in Sugar Land. The conference provides an opportunity to network with other law enforcement agencies and mental/behavioral health providers to share and learn from each other’s approaches to handling mental health crises and treatment in their different areas.
