Schulenburg softball beats down Moulton, then gets in-county win vs Flatonia

The Lady Horns softball team has earned an overall record above the .500 mark under head coach Gilbert Price at 9-5 with a handful of early wins and recently defeating Moulton and Flatonia, which are both teams in the same district. Schulenburg beat Moulton 20-4 and beat Flatonia 11-3.

The Fayetteville High School baseball team won by a wide margin March 14 and 15 as they defeated Somerville in both matches by scores of 13-0 and 25-4. Lions junior Reid Gross drove in four RBI's during the first game while freshman Jack Schley added two and junior Keagan Supak knocked in one.

More tri-county powerlifters to compete at state

It has been revealed that there are even more powerlifters from the tri-county area who will compete in the state powerlifting meet. Rice has three lifters who quali- fied in Vanessa Marquez, Raegan Nelson, and Bradi Freeman. Maruqez is in the 114 weight class with a squat of 295, bench press of 120, and 260 deadlift for a 675 total. Nelson is in the 132 weight class with a squat of 300, bench press of 140, and 300 deadlift for a 740 total. Freeman is in the 148 weight class with a 325 squat, 180 bench press, and 295 deadlift for a total of 800.

Number of area athletes qualify for State Powerlifting
Number of area athletes qualify for State Powerlifting

A bunch of powerlifters from the area have qualified for the state powerlifting tournament, which will be held March 24 and 25 at the at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. Area schools that will represent at the state tournament are Brazos, Columbus and Flatonia. SAN ANTONIO – Bulldogs boys hoops competed in the UIL boys state basketball tournament March 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio and were defeated by La Rue La Poynor High School with a final score of 66- 43. FLATONIA - Shorthorns golfer Reid Janda accomplished the hardest feat in golf March 6 at the Flatonia golf tournament held at Flatonia Golf Course, an ace. According to Schulenburg High School head golf coach Rich Hoogendoorn, Janda hit a shot on the par 3 seventh hole that took one bounce and went in the hole. This was also Janda’s second hole-in-one in his lifetime.

SAN ANTONIO - The Columbus High School girls basketball team was defeated by Holliday High School in the UIL state girls basketball tournament March 2 at the Alamodome in San Antonio by a final score of 59-40. The Lady Cardinals struggled to get their offense going throughout this game and Holliday's shooting accuracy was on, along with their ability to crash the boards and make layups. "Just one of those things, got to give them credit," said Columbus head girls basketball coach Mike Albers.

Flatonia Bulldogs makes first ever basketball state tournament

The Flatonia boys basketball team clinched a birth to their first state basketball tournament in school history with a 65-54 win against Thorndale High School March 4. This team has been dominant all year under head coach Chris Sodek and this isn't Sodek's first time at the state tournament. Sodek made back-to back state appearances with Mumford High School in 2012 and 2013, then won the state title with Mumford in 2014.

LOCKHART – The Columbus High School boys basketball team escaped with a close win vs Randolph High School at Lockhart ISD Gym Feb. 21 by a final score of 57-55. Columbus had control for most of the game and Randolph slowly but surely creeped back in the contest. The Cardinals gritty performance down the stretch led them to the win. “We know basketball’s a game of runs,” said Columbus interim head boys basketball coach Lowell Narcisse. Cardinals head coach Troy Bohac missed the game due to an illness.
