Columbus head girls basketball coach Mike Albers was recently named the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) coach of the year for the 2022-2023 season. It was well deserved as Albers earned his 900th career win along with a state tournament appearance in the same season.

MANSFIELD – Faith Academy traveled to Mansfield to participate in the TAIAO Baseball State Cham- pionship Wednesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 20. The Knights played two games on Wednesday and two games on Thursday. The games on Wednesday seeded them for the tournament on Thursday. La Grange High School track runner Austen Diggs is known for his blazing speed and recent - ly put it on display at the UIL 4A District 21/22 Area meet. As the meet was held on his home turf of La Grange, Diggs took first in both the 100 and 200 meter dash events.

BELLVILLE – The Bell- ville High School softball team was defeated by Needville High School April 18 at Brahmanettes Field on a final score of 8-0. Bell - ville struggled to put the bat on the ball as the Lady Blue Jays pitching was top notch. "Needville, they're a good team and they work hard to have a good pitching staff," said Bell ville head softball coach Court- ney Phillips.

LA GRANGE – The La Grange Lady Leps softball team was defeated by Caldwell High School with a final score of 4-0. Caldwell's defense and hitting was too much as the Lady Leps

Lady Horns softball has hung in nicely in 2023 with an overall record of 14-8 and 7-6 in district.

FLATONIA – The Flatonia Bulldogs baseball team held Ganando High School scoreless April 11 at Bulldogs Field in Fla- tonia by a final result of 4-0. Fla tonia was able to come up with some big hits and the pitching was excellent throughout the en- tire game.

Brazos speeds through East Bernard District Meet

The tri-county area had a good portion of athletes who made the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite Team. This team is made up of athletes picked by members of the THSCA and the player has to meet the THSCA award criteria in order to be nominated. It recognizes student- athletes across Texas for their superior achievement in their sport.

The Cardinals baseball team has continued their victorius ways as they’ve won eight of their last nine games, capturing seven in a row. Three of the wins have been shutouts and one of the wins came against Rice Consolidat- ed by a final score of 21-1.

VICTORIA – The Columbus High School boys and girls golf teams took home district championships April 3 and 4 at Riverside Golf Club in Victoria.

Columbus High School basketball player Karlee Mathis was named to the 2022-2023 TGCA Basketball All-Star selection list.

The Lady Wildcats softball team made a state tournament appearance last year and seem to be on track to make another appearance in 2023. It’s still early in the season, but Weimar currently has an overall record of 23-5-1 with a 7-1 record in district. They’ve also won their last 10 games in a row with three of them being wins by a final score of 17-0.

The Fayetteville High School baseball team is currently on a roll as they've won five of their last six games and won those five games consecutively. The wins were all from two-game series’ against Somerville, Snook, and then the Lions split a series with Burton, winning the first game and losing the second.
